Crammed in a small space in Newtown, Sydney, Adam Turnbull creates art. Like the busy suburb that he works from and the hectic city that surrounds it, Turnbull's paintings, designs, drawings and photography reflect the world around him -- they mirror the here and now.
The twenty-year-old freelance graphic designer's work is diverse and versatile -- his paintings adapt to the ever-changing scenes of contemporary music and pop culture. Forget traditional landscapes and painstakingly accurate portraits; Turnbull's artworks burst with youth and vibrancy and provide audiences with a snapshot of his subject's personality and style.
For the past two years, Turnbull has freelanced for a record company, Boundary Sounds, designing promotional material for Aussie bands and creating CD covers. In doing so, Turnbull injects the musical industry with a dose of his own artistic expression, interpreting the music and style of musicians and translating them onto CD covers and posters.
Mink Magazine decided to find out more about the man behind the designs by asking him to interpret and complete the following sentences.
1. The best thing about art is... when and if you get a job you don't have to
wear a suit
2. The things that annoy me the most are...
* Running for a train to get to the bottom of the stairs and have it pull
away. You're just running for disappointment
* That as soon as something is "cool", it's shit and no one likes it anymore
* Seeing something and thinking “noooo I invented thatâ€. Like small deodorant
cans. I swear I invented them...
3. If I was a millionaire... I would be the man who invented disposable socks
4. Werewolves, vampires, and fairies are... living in my backyard. I've seen them
pruning the garden. They are the ones who steal my pegs and switch my socks
5. The best way to party is... with friends or friends friends or friends
friends friends and making new friends, especially when [my friend] Nat has her special
photo on her. You should see, it starts good conversations and makes light of
any situation with a simple glance. If it wasn't so confronting I'd probably
have a copy
