Well, they like black, and they are self-taught designers. Johnny Leong and Glenn Cameron are Who Am Eye, an Australian label that’s been growing like lantana since its conception in 2005. Featured in this year’s L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, Who Am Eye has undoubtedly let the Australian fashion industry know who they are. Last year the duo’s apparel appeared in the Rosemount Australian Fashion Week 2008 in Sydney. Their threads have been seen in magazines worldwide, including Oyster, Rag Trader, Frankie, Cream, Tzu, Attitude, The Age, and the Sydney Morning Herald.

Rather than their experience come from plugging away at a three year degree, the boy’s education was a product of their passion to create and explore clothes design. Most impressively, they recognise their method of learning as an ongoing process.
‘We've just had to learn as we go and sometimes that means making mistakes. Other times it works in our favour, because we're not restricted to traditional techniques and we can approach things from a different perspective,’ explains Leong. In the case of Who Am Eye, the notion of trial and error has produced a solid collection of winter wear featuring dark, tight-scrunched pants, lose fitting shirts and jackets (bar one tight, leather-looking one for men), and the occasional splash of white and grey beneath heavy black duffels. I can promise you, Who Am Eye will translate from fashion shoot, to catwalk, to sidewalk without losing its striking appearance. |
