Fashions these days are clearly derived from those which (or whom) have come before. The contemporary high waist hails the elegant wide-legs of the 1050’s, bell-bottomed 70’s, and stovepiped 80’s. Doc Martins popularity claims origins in the British punk scene. The shirt, though simple, calls upon its demure ancestors from the 1850’s, and again from Gabrielle Chanel’s challenging of masculinity in her suit-like designs. My scarves hail from an op-shop. So it only seems to make sense that Lucky 13 would adopt plural approaches when it came to selecting which elements of the past would feature in their recent collection.
Consequently, Lucky 13’s 2008 summer wardrobe is like the fashion-Olympics; they have bower-birded their favourite elements of multiple cultures and decades, and with them developed a range to suit a wide demographic; from the effeminate (notably their bright and floaty, chequered-like ‘Flim Flam’ dress) to the grungy (such as their loose ‘Flaming Youth’ super-wide neck tees). Designer/’everything person’ Irena BLAH completed a degree in fashion technology to foreground her understanding of fashion, however starting up a label was primarily inspired by friends who would ask her to make them clothes. ‘Mostly guy friends, actually!’ explains Irena. ‘Having made guys clothes and now doing women’s give the Lucky 13 girl that edgy feeling - it’s like stealing your boyfriends’ wardrobe yet still looking feminine.’ She adds.
‘Summer 08 is a new neo nerd’s look; we call it off the wall! Filled with Spunky geeks, new styles and great colours.’ Explains Kate Stancliffe.
White, floral patterned ‘Kelly’ Short, geometrically inspired, black, white and grey Kiss’n’Catch Tee, elegant wide-legged, black Celine pant, and their sleeveless Etiquette shirt.
